Outline
of Requirements
We
received an initial approach from the consultant
acting as designers for the Water Authority
to provide technical assistance in preparing
a design for upgrading the discharge from
the site from around 10l/s to 37l/s to alleviate
surcharging / flooding during storm conditions
of surrounding properties.
Design and subsequent installation
works to be carried out under partnering
agreement between Pims Pumps /The Water
Authority and the consultant.
Constraints placed on the
design by the capacity of the receiving
treatment works resulting in normal Day
to Day dry weather flows (DWF) from pump
station were not to be increased but under
storm conditions discharge to increase to
37l/s.
Further constraint placed
on us in that any modification works to
station must be contained within the confines
of an already limited space.
Site investigations were
carried out to ascertain existing level
of equipment and space available. Pims then
involved with ongoing design works and meetings
to formulate a solution
Various designs were considered
to arrive at a solution that best fitted
the Water Authorities Constraints and those
of the space available.
Pims
Pumps Proposal
The final solution comprises
of a 3 pump system with 2 DWF pumps operating
on a duty / standby basis discharging around
9.5l/s down the existing 100mm rising main
and a third storm pump discharging around
27.5l/s in storm conditions through a new
200mm OD PE pressure pipe.
Pims meetings with the
Water Authority operations highlighted a
requirement for flexibility in using both
rising main with a combination of pumps
in emergency’s and a pipeline design
in the pump station was undertaken to provide
this facility.
Once design finalised Pims
pumps project managed preparation of a surge
analysis report for both the existing and
new rising mains.
